Origin:
The bold and fiery Shiba Inu is Japan's smallest native spitz dog. Shibas are known for their ‘fox like’ appearance, are medium in size when full grown, and feature a specially curly tail!
The Shiba Inu is one of the ‘original’ dog breeds still recognized today. Originally bred for mountain type terrains, and used for hunting, and recognized in the Utility and Non-Sporting Group!
Expected Adult Weight:
17 - 23 lbs.
Expected Adult Height:
13 - 17 inches.
Expected Life Span:
12 - 16 years.
The Shiba Inu is known for a bold, fiery personality. The Japanese have three words to describe the breed's mental traits: kaani-i (spirited boldness), ryosei (good nature), and soboku (alertness). Combined, these traits make up the interesting, intelligent, and strong-willed temperament of this breed.
The Shiba Inu has a thick double coat that gives him a Teddy Bear look. The outer coat is stiff and straight, and the undercoat is soft and thick.
He sheds moderately throughout the year and twice a year when he "blows" his coat.
Regular Grooming Frequency:
The Shiba Inu is fairly easy to maintain when it comes to grooming. He is a naturally clean and odor-free dog.
He does need brushing to remove dead hair and distribute oils once a week, or more often when he's shedding heavily. Seasonal Grooming is recommended.
Trim his nails once or twice a month, as needed. If you can hear the nail clicking on the floor, they're too long.
Home Grooming Tools Required:
Metal comb and soft slicker.
Socialization is vital for puppies to learn how to be friendly and get along with other dogs and people... training should begin early to teach the Shiba Inu proper canine manners!
It is important to understand the freethinking nature of the Shiba Inu so one won't be frustrated.
The Shiba Inu is highly intelligent, You may have to make him think obedience is his idea!
The Shiba Inu is not hyperactive but appreciates and requires going outside for some action as it is important to a Shiba.
He needs a good daily workout, whether it's a walk in the neighborhood or a jog alongside his bicycling owner!
